His Excellency, Adama Barrow, President of The Gambia on Tuesday 5th December, 2023 visited the Independence Stadium in Bakau as part of his meet the People to see the level of the ongoing work at the country’s only stadium.
The President was taken on a conducted tour of the facility by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Bakary Y. Badjie, and the General Manager of the stadium, Ebou Faye.
Speaking to the media, President Barrow expressed satisfaction with the level of progress of the work.
He described the work at the stadium as a great job and a big achievement of his government.
He highlighted his government and personal commitment to the development of sports in the country and that they are committed to completing the final works at the stadium to fit the CAF standard.
“All plans are in place to complete the remaining jobs so we can resume our home games. We will do all it takes to complete the renovation. I promised to be here to watch our first match after completion. I will come myself to watch the game,” he said.
He stressed the need for a sustainability plan for our infrastructures in the country for better and rapid development.
“The best way to develop this country is to have sustainability plans,” he said.
Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie expressed his appreciation to the president for the visit.
He said President Barrow led the fundraising campaign/process for the rehabilitation of the stadium.
“This is the first time the government has invested that huge amount of money in the rehabilitation of the stadium since it was built in the 80s,” Minister Badjie said.
