As the year 2023 calendar draws to a close, I am delighted in my capacity as the Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) to take a moment to engage in self-reflection, express appreciation, and commend each member of the armed forces for their dedicated contributions towards safeguarding our national boundaries and independence. The steadfast loyalty and tireless efforts displayed by all of you throughout the previous years have propelled GAF to establish a stronger bond with our esteemed Gambian citizens. This bond has been nurtured through the display of skills and endurance, presenting the armed forces as a unified entity that serves the populace. Undoubtedly, we have made significant strides in understanding our responsibilities and raising awareness about the importance of transforming into an armed force that embodies the welfare and interests of its people. Your dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to protecting our nation have been the cornerstone of our security sector reform.
In view of the foregoing, I want to further take a moment to express the intentions of Command and outline our vision for the future. The Gambia Armed Forces has always been committed to fostering an environment of merit, welfare, and patriotism, for which we are determined to further strengthen in the coming year. Therefore, we recognize the importance of merit-based preferment and the significance of competence assessment in shaping our armed forces. We firmly believe that professional elevation in the armed forces pivots on improving the procedures for selection, education, assignment and promotion. In the upcoming year, we will prioritize the implementation of fair and transparent evaluation processes that reward merit and ensure that promotions are based on competence and performance in line with our republican ideals.
We also acknowledge the vital role that the welfare of our personnel plays in maintaining a strong and cohesive armed forces. Accordingly, we are committed to enhancing the well-being of our men and women in uniform by judiciously utilizing our resources. By investing in their welfare, we empower our personnel to perform at their best and contribute to the overall success of our mission. We will strive to achieve this by providing the necessary support and resources to ensure that each member of our armed forces receives the care, training, and opportunities they deserve.
Furthermore, loyalty and patriotism are fundamental values that underpin the strength and unity of our armed forces. We recognize and appreciate the unwavering loyalty and dedication demonstrated by our personnel. In the coming year, we will continue to foster a culture that values and promotes loyalty to our nation, our armed forces, and our fellow comrades. We encourage each and every member of our force to embrace their patriotic duty, upholding the values that define our great nation.
Our vision for the future is one of excellence, unity, and service. In this regard, we aim to build an armed forces that is renowned for its professionalism, integrity, and exceptional capabilities.
