As our efforts to fight against Caste-Based Slavery in The Gambia through sensitization campaigns and other forms of information sharing continues, the President Of Movement for Social Justice Msj-4 has on Thursday November 23, 2023 filed a case at the Basse Police Station against people who are calling and threatening the lives of our Executive President and other members of the movement for their continuous engagement with members of some communities who continue to be victims of this inhumane cultural practice.
Our executive President, Yuba Jawara filed the case after receiving direct calls from three individuals namely Ousman Magasy, Mahamadou Amie Jagana and Suwaibou Jagana. In their conversation, the above mentioned people threatened to harm and even kill Our President that tries to enter their community to preach against Caste-Based Slavery which they see as a deeply-rooted culture that should continue to exist.
After providing the recorded audios of the phone calls to the police as evidence, the police through their investigation carefully examined the audios and also interrogated the above mentioned persons and came up with the following decisions:
-That the utterances of Mahamadou Jagana and Ousman Magasy that if he come to their community they will dealt with him mercilessly does not constitute a threat and therefore did not commit an offence, so he cannot be charge for breaking any law or for threatening or an individual.
-That Suwaibou Jagana has been charged for threatening to kill our executive President Yuba Jawara, Is charged but has been released on bail.
However, while we commend the police for taking a giant step regarding the ongoing matter, we request that further investigations be conducted and ensure that legal actions are taken against the accused person(s).
As a Movement for social justice, we cannot sit and watch innocent people being victimized, discriminated and marginalized in our society in the name of culture and traditions that are even harmful to the human race. It is a fundamental human right of every individual to live freely in the society without any form of hinderances. To sum up, the 1997 constitution of The Gambia gives every citizen of the country the right to life, freedom of expression, association and assembly. Therefore , we will never relent in our efforts to fight against injustices in our society. We want to ensure that the freedom and fundamental human rights of all individuals are guaranteed and protected according to the law.
