This morning, the Chairman of Brikama Area Council (BAC), Yankuba Darboe, reported that “Police have descended on the BAC council premises, arresting elected councillors! The Vice Chairman has already been arrested and detained at Brikama Police Station!
The reason for the raiding of the council’s premises and arrest of elected officers isn’t yet known!
The arrest followed the controversial government demolition exercise of illegal structures encroached on in public areas—actions BAC is legally challenging in the courts.
President Barrow and Tourism Minister (Ahmat Bah) voiced their frustrations with the legal challenge by attacking the opposition’s Municipality during their Meeting at the People Tour rally at Brikama.
One wonders WHY the police are raiding the council after a few days of the President and Minister’s statement. Are the police sent to intimidate the elected councillors? If that’s correct, is it not an affront to democracy confirming the government’s move to reintroduce a dictatorship?
We thought the police raid and arrest would be concerned with the revelations from the commissions of inquiries of the massive thief and corruption led by the council CEO and Financial Director, not the elected officers executing their duties.
Gambia, brace up for the return to dictatorship! We are following the developments!
