FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
As the Media and Communication Secretary of the National Peoples Party (NPP), I write to express our profound concern regarding the recent actions of Kerr Fatou, specifically in relation to the unlawful recording and dissemination of a private conversation involving Bajamba Bojang, the National President of UDP.
The impact of this incident extends beyond the political realm, as it has caused significant distress to families of some our party supporters in Brufut. Such actions are not only unethical but also undermine the noble profession of journalism, which is integral to the functioning of a democratic society.
Journalism is often referred to as the ‘Fourth Estate’ due to its critical role in providing oversight and holding various entities accountable in a democratic nation. This role comes with the responsibility to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct. The principles of fairness, privacy, and integrity are fundamental to ethical journalism. In this instance, the actions taken by Kerr Fatou have not only breached these principles but have also potentially infringed upon legal boundaries concerning privacy and consent.
We understand that the competitive nature of the media industry can often lead to the pursuit of sensational stories. However, it is imperative to remember that the pursuit of news should never come at the cost of ethical values and the basic rights of individuals. The NPP firmly believes in the freedom of the press and the vital role of media in our society. However, this freedom must be exercised with a sense of responsibility and a commitment to ethical standards.
We strongly advise Kerr Fatou to reevaluate its journalistic practices and align them with the ethical standards that govern responsible journalism. The reputation and credibility of your media house, and indeed the broader media landscape, depend on adherence to these principles. It is crucial to remember that the power of the media comes with the responsibility to report truthfully, fairly, and respectfully.
The NPP remains committed to supporting a free and fair press, and we hope that moving forward, Kerr Fatou will lead by example in upholding the integrity and ethics that are essential to the profession of journalism.
Sincerely,
Sulayman Camara
Media and Communication Secretary, National Peoples Party (NPP)
