RESPONSE TO UNITE’S PRESS CONFERENCE HELD ON NOVEMBER 3RD , 2026

4th November 2026
The Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Justice wishes to address allegations made by UNITE at a press conference held on November 3r°, 2026. UNITE claimed amongst other things that the Local Government Commission of Inquiry Report was altered after its submission to the Government. This allegation is entirely false and deliberately calculated to bring disrepute to the Government regarding the White Paper on the Commission’s recommendations. It is intended to distort the public’s perspective on the findings of the Commission and the Government’s reaction to them.
The Government wishes to make it categorically clear to the general public that it did not in any way interfere with, amend, edit or alter anything in the report. The Government wants to reiterate that the report is published as it was submitted by the Commission without any changes, corrections or revisions on the part of the Government. The allegation is therefore false and misleading.
It was also alleged that the report was not gazetted as has been the case with other commission reports in the past. With respect to this allegation, the Ministry wishes to state that The Gambia Government White Paper on the Report of the Commission of Inquiry into the Conduct of all Local Government Councils and for Connected Matters, 2026 and the Local Government Commission of Inquiry Report 2026 were on the 29th day of October gazetted by The Gambia Printing and Publishing Corporation in G.N No.211/2026.
Consequently, the printing department was in a position to make copies available to the public on the 30th of October 2026. The decision to upload electronic versions of the reports on the websites of the Attorney General’s Chambers & Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Information, Media and
Broadcasting Services and the Ministry of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs was made with a view to facilitate wider public access.
The Ministry of Justice remains firmly committed to transparency, adherence to due process and the rule of law.
