The Vice President of The Gambia, His Excellency Mohammed B.S Jallow, delivered a pivotal address today at the Heads of State Summit during the ongoing Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – #COP28 in Dubai.
Commencing his statement, VP Jallow expressed gratitude to the United Arab Emirates on behalf of His Excellency Adama Barrow, President of The Gambia, for the warm reception.
Highlighting the pervasive impact of climate change on a global scale, VP Jallow reiterated The Gambia’s unwavering commitment to a sustainable future. He emphasized the nation’s dedication to transitioning towards a low-carbon economy and promoting green energy and eco-friendly technologies.
Providing insights into The Gambia’s proactive measures, the Vice President shared that the country updated its Nationally Determined Contribution in December 2021. Moreover, in compliance with the Paris Agreement, The Gambia submitted its Long-Term Climate-Neutral Development Strategy 2050 (LTS) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in September 2022.
“In addition, we are working on local adaptation measures that range from reinforcing flood mitigation infrastructure, to implementing climate-resilient agricultural practices, including the recently launched climate-smart agricultural projects, climate-resilient fisheries and adaptive capacity strengthening of our rural populations, through climate-resilient and diversified livelihoods,” the Vice President highlighted, adding “these actions are vital for safeguarding our people and ecosystems.
