From Tallinding to Türkiye: Gambian Surgeon Bala Musa Manneh’s Inspiring Journey From Rural Teacher to Heart Surgery
Bala Musa Manneh is a Gambian medical doctor and surgeon who is building an impressive career in cardiovascular surgery in Türkiye.
Bala Musa Manneh was born and raised in Tallinding Kunjang, a town within the Kanifing Municipality.
His journey is a powerful reminder that great dreams can come from humble beginnings.
Bala attended Latri-kunda sabiji basic cycle and then to Nusrat Senior Secondary School in Bundung.
After completing his secondary education, he did not immediately become a doctor.
Instead, he served as an unqualified teacher in the rural areas of The Gambia.
He taught, he served and kept learning.
His circumstances did not stop his ambition.
His determination eventually opened another door.
in 2014, Bala Musa secured a scholarship to study medicine in Türkiye at Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine and in 2021, graduated with a Degree in General Medicine (MBCh.B).
He graduated with his medical degree in 2021
But graduation was only the beginning, Bala continued his medical training.
He is now a Cardiovascular Surgery resident surgeon at Ege University in Türkiye.
He has progressed to the level of senior resident doctor in Cardiovascular surgery, one of the most demanding areas of medicine in Europe.
Cardiovascular surgeons perform complex operations that can save lives and Bala’s daily routine involves performing some of the most complex surgical procedures in the medical field.
Recently, Bala Musa has been developing a passion for heart transplantationbwhich involves replacing a severely diseased heart with a healthy donor heart.
Bala’s Dream is to build a clinic in the Gambia, specifically for Heart related ailments and how to support these patients.
His story is not only about becoming a doctor but also about perseverance.
A young man from Tallinding Kunjang went into the rural areas as an unqualified teacher and years later, he is training in one of the most specialised areas of surgery in Türkiye.
His journey should remind Gambian young people that their current circumstances do not have to define their future.
